How a Retail Grocer Came out Tops in Open Enrollment
Open enrollment is a time when many competing priorities come together to create stress for benefit administrators. They're trying to execute on health care cost control initiatives, roll out new benefit options and make the enrollment process as smooth as possible. On top of that, they're also trying to engage their employees throughout the process and take advantage of the opportunity to showcase the value the company provides through benefits.
Consequently, open enrollment can feel complicated, overwhelming and, dare we say it, like something to dread.
Not so for Tops Markets, a retail grocer in the Northeastern United States, who shared how they leaned on their benefits technology partnership with Benefitfocus to introduce a new level of ease and convenience for their employees and benefit administrators.
Tops operates with a diverse workforce of 5,000 benefit-eligible employees, ranging from Generation Z to baby boomers, working across 180 stores in three states. The company had a goal to help all of these employees better understand their new high-deductible health plan (HDHP) offering.
Tops shared that initiative with their Benefitfocus customer success manager, who helped them create a plan to best leverage their benefits technology for education and communication around the potential value of choosing an HDHP. Tops also introduced the Benefitfocus App, which enabled their employees to access their benefits information, educate themselves and make enrollment elections anywhere, anytime, from their smartphone or tablet.
All of this translated to an open enrollment experience that empowered Tops' employees and eased stress for their benefit administrators:
“Open enrollment is something that most people dread… not this year and not next year. I know that for sure it’s going to go very smoothly.” – Gail Marchese, Manager, Benefits & Wellness, Tops Market, LLC
